Aerospace Engineering Scholarships


Eligibility Requirements 

All KU Aerospace students who are showing evidence of high level of achievement (minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2), and who will be taking sophomore, junior, or senior classes in the academic year the scholarship will be given are eligible. While receiving the scholarships, the recipients must remain in the Aerospace Engineering program taking at least 15 credit hours in both the fall and spring terms, continue to make progress toward the BS degree in Aerospace Engineering, and maintain an overall cumulative GPA of 3.2.

Effective Academic Year 2017-2018: Recipients must maintain a cumulative KU GPA of 3.25 and complete at least 30 KU credit hours each academic year.

Goldsmith Aerospace Merit Scholarships

The Goldsmith Aerospace Merit Scholarships were established in 1996 to recognize outstanding students in Aerospace Engineering, especially those who have not been receiving scholarships from other sources. These scholarships are possible due to the generosity of Irene M. Goldsmith.

These one year scholarships will be awarded to undergraduate Aerospace Engineering students who will become sophomores, juniors, or seniors in the academic year the scholarship will be given. The award will not be renewable but the recipients may apply for renewal as long as the eligibility requirements are met. Incoming students admitted to the School of Engineering are automatically submitted for consideration for the scholarhips.

Goldsmith Scholarships for Incoming Freshman

The Goldsmith Scholarships for Incoming Freshman was established to recognize outstanding incoming students in Aerospace Engineering. The scholarships are possible due to the generosity of Irene M. Goldsmith. The scholarships will be renewable for four years under conditions described below.

Eligibility Requirements

All incoming Aerospace Engineering freshman who show the evidence of a high level of achievement during their high school years as demonstrated in their GPA, ACT (or SAT) scores, and their class rank will be eligible

Renewal Conditions

While receiving the scholarships, the recipients must remain in the Aerospace Engineering program taking at least 15 credit hours in both the fall and spring terms, continue to make progress toward the BS degree in Aerospace Engineering, and maintain an overall cumulative GPA of 3.2.

Joel Don Grantham Scholarship

The Joel Don Grantham Scholarship was established in 1987 by the Grantham family in memory of their son, Joel Don Grantham, who died in a tragic car and train accident in Lawrence in 1987. Joel Don Grantham was a student in the Department of Aerospace Engineering.

The Grantham Scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding Aerospace Engineering student who will become a sophomore in the academic year the scholarship will be initiated and will be awarded for a period of three years as long as the requirements described below re met. Therefore, a new recipient of the scholarship will be selected every three years.

Renewal Conditions

While receiving the scholarship, the recipient must remain in the Aerospace Engineering program taking at least 15 credit hours in both fall and spring terms, continue to make progress toward the BS degree in Aerospace Engineering, and maintain an overall cumulative GPA of 3.2.

Larry L. Jones Scholarship

The Larry L. Jones Aerospace Engineering Scholarship was established in 1998. The Jones Scholarship will be awarded to a deserving Aerospace Engineering student who will become a junior or senior in the academic year the scholarship will be awarded. The scholarship may be renewed if the eligibility requirements are met.

Capt. John C. North Memorial Scholarship

The Capt. John North Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Capt. John C. North, Jr. in 1972 by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John C. North, Sr. and his friends. Captain North, who was a graduate of the University of Kansas, died tragically in the crash of an Air Force KC-135. The North Scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding Aerospace Engineering student who will become a sophomore or junior in the academic year the scholarship will be given.

Daryl E. Wagner Scholarship

The Daryl E. Wagner Scholarship was established in 1994. The Wagner Scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding Aerospace Engineering student who will become a junior in the academic year the award will be given.

Willis A. Waas Scholarship

The Willis A. Waas Scholarship was established by Andrea Waas, Mr. Waas's daughter, in 1990 to assist students at the University of Kansas in obtaining their private pilot license. This award is given in memory of Willis A. Waas, a 1951 KU graduate, who was killed in a 1987 small plane crash caused by mechanical failure.

The Waas Scholarship provides up to $1,500 to a full-time KU student in pursuit of a Private Pilot Certificate. The Waas Scholarship fund is used to establish a line of credit at a flight school.

Eligibility Requirements
  1. Successful completion of FAA Private Pilot Airmen Knowledge written test
  2. Have a current FAA third-class (or better) medical certificate
  3. Be enrolled full-time at KU

  2. A personal essay of less than 500 words explaining how the Waas Scholarship will support your pursuit and/or completion of the requirements of the Private Pilot Certificate
  3. Copy of relevant pages of pilot logbook

Sierra Nevada Cooperation: Women in STEM Scholarship

SNC has established a scholarship program to assist those who identify as female and plan to or are currently pursuing a degree and career in a non-medical, STEM-related field in college or graduate school.

The program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship, tuition assistance, and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Eligibility for individual programs is determined at the sole discretion of the sponsor, and eligible applications are reviewed by Scholarship America’s evaluation team.

If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $7,500 award. Up to five (5) awards will be granted. Awards are not renewable, but students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Requirements
  1. Be a current high school senior, college undergraduate or graduate level student pursuing a degree and career in a non-medical, STEM-related field.
  2. Plan to enroll in a part-time or full-time undergraduate or graduate study at an accredited four-year college or university for the entire upcoming academic year.
  3. Applicants must self identify as female.
  4. Have a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
